Claiming Your Donation As A Tax Deduction

Sri Lankan Aid is a 501(c)(3) organization which means that we are seen by the IRS as a tax exempt organization, and therefore any donations made to us are tax deductible for their donors and can be claimed on form 1040 under schedule A.  In order to claim donations to a charitable organization the donations need to be itemized individually.  In other words, in the case of multiple donations, they must each be listed individually (not claimed as one lump sum) and records of each individual donation must be kept by the donor.  The complicated part of this process is not necessarily the filling out of the tax form itself, but is the record keeping.

In order to assist you with this task, Sri Lankan Aid keeps record of all donations that we receive, and so we can provide you with this information as needed.  To make this easier still, upon receiving your donation we will send you a receipt providing the amount received and when we got it, as well as our EIN (employee identification number) which is our tax ID number.  Below you will find the forms for schedule A of form 1040, the instructions for filling out schedule A of form 1040, and publication 526, which describes in greater detail the specifics about donating to charitable organizations and claiming those donations as tax deductions.  As always feel free to email our treasurer, Gereon Yee, at gereon@srilankanaid.com for any info regarding donation records or any general questions/comments you might have.  Once again, thank you for being a part of our work.
