Hospital Equipment Donations

What: Donation of medical equipment to five rural hospitals.
Where: hospitals at Valaichenai, Batticaloa, Chenkalady, Kallar, and Vakarai, Batticaloa District
Why: Although the hospital system in Sri Lanka is nationalized, there is nevertheles a shortage of resources to supply facilities in the east. Most hospitals are underfunded and unable to provide even basic care in certain areas of medicine, such as diabetes or emergency response. Furthermore, due to military checkpoints, many people living in these rural communities are prohibited from accessing proper medical treatment in larger centers, despite being relatively close to facilities where treatment is available. Our donations of equipment brought much-needed supplies to rural hospitals throughout the district.
When: July and August, 2007
Who: Sam, Nick, Ruwan, Gereon, Cory, Rajiv, Margaret with donations from St. Mary’s hospital of San Francisco, CA.
