Alumkulum School Restoration

What: Repair of a severely dilapidated primary school. Work included the creation of a new classroom, roof and woodwork repair, fencing, and other physical building maintenance.
Where: Alumkulum village, Batticaloa District
Why: Although the school in Alumkulum was not damaged by the tsunami, the shabby facility received many students who were displaced, in addition to existing class loads. While most tsunami-reconstruction aid dollars raised by larger NGOs was not available for indirect work in communities like this, our small organization was able to mobilize to meet that need.
When: August 2005
Who: Ruwan, Nick, Gereon, Kendall, Marissa, Greg, local laborers and school officials.
